Grey skies and a breath of wind set the 2010 Mallee 12 field off in pursuit of fast times, but we had little inkling of what was to come in the next 40 minutes of racing. Sure, we new Lisa Weightman was likely to shred Mai Tagami's female race record, but not for a moment did we imagine that Mona's 2008 record would be threatened in any way.
That was until we spotted Riza Gultekin and Ian Brade being torched by Lachlan McArthur on lap one of our 4km looped track. Lachlan had flown under our radar as Lisa's husband and training partner, all the while accumulating 185km training weeks enroute to M12. Sneaky mover!
Meanwhile, Lisa distanced herself from all the girls and most of the men, showcasing the form that will ensure a great marathon performance at the Commonwealth Games in India.
The age group speedsters were at it again, with Bert Pelgrim and Julie Norney in stunning form, and the rest of the family in hot pursuit. Rising stars Denver Linklater and Zak Callaway led a formidable pack of U18 runners, hinting at where their talent might eventually take them.
And back just a little further, was the biggest M12 field ever assembled, a stampede of runners, walkers, and M4 Rat Racers all looking to get the job done in fast & fine style.
But in the battle for placings and prize money, it really was a two horse race with Lachlan McArthur building on his early ascendancy to claim a brilliant 37:37 race victory, and LJ doing as she pleased with the girls record, bringing the numbers down to a remarkable 39:49, a massive five minutes faster than the existing record.
The talent ran deep in 2010 with Riza, Bradey, Sydney star Jake Moore, and a very smooth Sebastian Tan filling out the top five male placings. On the girls side of the race, daylight to second, but classy performances by Meredith Cook, Julie Norney, Natasha Key, and Narelle Pollock saw all of the female prize money leave town!
We extend congratulations to each and every competitor, thank you and an amazing raft of event partners for bringing colour and good spirit to our 2010 Mallee 12. We would be honoured to have your company again in 2011.
Finally our best wishes to Lisa in her quest for marathon glory in New Delhi. Your Mallee fan club is with you every step of the way!
